The Power of Paint

Good morning fellow bloggers.  It's Thursday and the week seems to be going so slow when you have a day off during the week.  My school system had Monday off which I enjoyed but now the rest of the week seems to be slowing down.  Well, I found these metal floral pictures at a GARAGE SALE, of course.  I really like the scroll y  frames but they just needed to be freshened up, if you know what I mean.....or just a different look to them.   Anyways here are the before pictures:

So after I scrubbed them up I decided to rub pink paint on the metal frames to bring out the pink in the flowers.  I tried to leave as much pink paint in the grooves as I could.  After the paint dried I than brushed on a satin poly-acrylic finish to preserve the pink paint on the metal.  Here is the after picture:

I think they look more delicate and girly.  They would look great in a bedroom, bathroom or even in an entrance of a home.  What do you think?

Shabby Chic Instruments

Good evening!! I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving. We spent a few days out in New York with the in-laws. It's always a good time to go and visit family that you haven't seen in a while. I am going to share with you these cute metal instruments that I found. I just fell in love with them...I thought they were so neat looking. I wasn't really that happy with the color. I thought they looked dated. So I took some spray paint and then I wanted to make sure that the detail would still show so I wiped some pink paint in all the crevices. I think they would look cute in an office space or even in a little girls room. Have a great rest of your week!!

New and Improved Tray

Good afternoon!  Hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving weekend!  It always goes by in a flash.....  Our extended Thanksgiving weekend was really very nice...filled with family time and holiday events and a lot of eating!!   I was able to get a few Christmas presents on black Friday so I would consider that successful!  Our Christmas tree is up and decorated and Christmas cards are ordered!!!  Yeah....things are getting done!

I wanted to share this updated tray project with you.  I found this tray at a local consignment shop for I think five bucks.  I thought it was really neat with all the carvings on it.  Here it is before.

I gave it a few coats of green spray paint and then glazed it with black paint.  I am so pleased with how it turned out.......

Have a great day!!!

One Little Footstool

Good morning.  I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving.  My family and I had a very nice day and we are very thankful for everything we have, but I can't believe how fast Thanksgiving came up.  Actually, the year seems to be flying by.  This is not my normal day for blogging but I was a little busy cooking up a dinner for the kids, Grandma and us.   Anyways, let's start my little project which is this little darling stool bottom that had no top to it.  I loved the carving along the sides and the feet are so feminine.  The first thing I did was to paint it.  Thought that pink and white suited it well so I got started.  Painted it all in pink, than painted it white where all the carving was and wiped off the excess.  I knew that it had to have a top for it, so my husband cut out a board for the top.  I didn't want the top to set down in the stool because the sides of the stool were so beat up and you could see all the old nail and staple marks.  So, I found some foam and cut it to fit the top and sprayed the foam to the top of the board and  than covered that with batting which I sprayed glued that to the foam.  I than covered all that with a hot pink felt, which actually was stapled to the sides of the footstool.  I covered the hot pink with some burlap that came from Joann's.

Decided that it needed a little bit more, so I found some trim that closely matched the hot pink underneath the burlap.  I also found some wide lace that I thought matched the burlap look and added that to the bottom of the burlap which I stapled onto the bottom of the burlap.  I than covered all that by hot gluing the trim to the top of the lace to cover all the staples.

Here is a look at the white peeping thru on the carvings on the legs.  I decided not  to distressed this piece because I wanted the details of the carvings to show up.
Here is the finished result.  What do you think?

Nothing but the Frame

Happy Wednesday!!! I am sure a lot of you are looking forward to having the day off on Thanksgiving and sitting down to a feast. I know that I am really excited for it. We are heading out of town this afternoon and I can't wait to catch up with family that we haven't seen in awhile.

So I found this very large, beautiful painting at an estate sale. The only problem was it looked really dark and dated. I pondered for a while how I could possibly change the look without ruining the painting itself, because I know that I could never re-create something that looks like this. Somebody once put a lot of time and effort into it. It finally dawned on me that I didn't like the dated frame. I thought it looked to dark and didn't do anything for the painting. So I took out some trusty white paint and after a couple coats it looked too perfect for the painting. Therefore, I took some dark stain and wiped it in all the corners and along the lines of the frame. I think it gave it a more rustic appearance and added depth and detail to the frame.

I hope you all have a fantastic Thanksgiving and enjoy it wherever you may be. :)

This is the before picture. As you can see the painting is just gorgeous, but the frame is so outdated.

Here is the after picture. I think the lighter frame just makes the painting look that much better.

New Look for a Lamp

Hi!  Thanks for stopping by on this Tuesday....  I have an easy lamp update to share with you.  I found this lamp base at a local garage sale.  It didn't have a lampshade but I found one on clearance at Target.  I think the lampshade is fun and fits the lamp perfectly.  Aaaah...this picture makes me miss summer...seeing my flowers blooming.  Although, here in Michigan we can hardly complain as the weather has been so tame for this time of year.

I thought the lamp just needed a bit more color, so I pulled out my trusty aqua spray paint.  I gave it a few coats and then rubbed stain on it to give it a bit more depth.

Do you like it before or after better?
Have a great evening!!!

Updated Bookcase

Good morning!  I cannot believe that it's almost Thanksgiving.....time is just flying by.  Seriously....this is my most FAVORITE time of the year and I would love to slow it down a bit.  There are so many fun things to do with your family this time of year.  My son and I were flying solo this past week while my husband went deer hunting.  He's coming home with a buck today and a HUGE smile as well.  I am not a huge fan of venison, however, I guess I will be surfin' the internet for some yummy recipes.

I purchased this book case a few years back at a garage sale.  It was in good condition, however it just looked really dark.

So, I gave it a coat of Kilz primer and then painted the back of the bookcase a fun green color.  The rest of the bookcase received a coat of my favorite Benjamin Moore white paint, which runs a bit higher in price but is worth every cent.  Here is an after picture of the bookcase.  I like it better after....it looks brighter and cleaner!

Have a great day!!!

Top Redone

Good morning....It's a beautiful Thursday morning and I have the day off of work, which I am loving it and can't quite decide what to do.  Well, guys, I did it again.....I painted and redid this table and went oops, I forgot to take the before picture.  When I finally figure out what to do with a project I quickly get started and when I get done I realize that I didn't take a before picture..  Anyways, this cute little square table had a oak top that had stained rings on the surface.  The  rest of table was already painted black, which I already liked.  I really liked  this beige flat paint I had and decided to paint the top and the drawer that color.  I  like black and beige.  When the paint was dry, I splattered the top and the drawer with some black paint.  I than outlined the top and the drawer with black paint, so that it looked distressed, but wasn't.
When the table was done I thought it needed something more.  I went thru some of my jewelry finds and I found this pretty brooch.  I loved the colors and thought it gives it a dressy look and a little more color.  I glued the brooch on with E6000 glue.  I am using this table in my house and the brooch has stayed on.
I really like this table.  Sometimes it is fun to do something that is easy and looks so different from the original look.  The lines of this piece of furniture are straight with no curves or dips.  Sometimes this is refreshing....

So what do you think?  Until next time, Dianne.......

One of a Kind Vanity

Good afternoon! It's a sunny but very cold day here in Michigan. Perfect day to be sitting by the computer blogging about a recent project while the baby is napping.
I found this beautiful vanity at a garage sale. It's pretty old, not quite sure the what era it is from, but I know that I haven't seen something quite like this. I can't say that it was super cheap but it is worth every penny of it. I knew buying it that I was taking on a big project but I couldn't wait to get started on it.
As you can see in the before pictures it was re stained this really dark, chocolate brown. I wanted to brighten it up and paint it a lighter color and emphasize all the detail on it. So I sanded it down and gave it a couple coats of primer. Then I picked out a simple cream with a more matted finish. I am not really into shiny pieces lately so this was perfect. When I completed a few coats I antiqued it with a blueish gray to really make the intricate detail stand out. I still wasn't satisfied because after being around for a few years it definitely had a few scratches and dings in it, as most things do that have been around for a while. So I took my trusty sand paper and went to town. After all the sanding I finally was satisfied and I put a couple coats of wax on it. After all the work I was happy with the finished product. Hope you have a great rest of your day!

Something Simple

Good morning.  It's Tuesday and I have a really simple makeover.  Found this cute serving cart that our mother's or our grandmother's had in their kitchen at one time.  I really liked the color it was but the bottom shelf on some rust on it.  The rest of the cart was in really good shape and had no other rust spots.  Here is the before picture:

I didn't really want to paint this and I had picked up some adorable contact paper at Home Goods that I had been saving for just the right piece.  When I had seen the bottom shelf, I pulled out the contact paper and started covering the top of each shelf.  It was a little frustrating to lay it straight and get all the bubbles of air out, but with a little patience I succeeded.  Here is the after pictures:

So what do you think?  Like the before picture or the after picture?  See you on Thursday, Dianne.......

Transforming One Dollar Plates

Good morning and happy Monday!  I hope the weather is better where you are right now this morning....as it's raining here in Michigan.  My son and I usually head to our local indoor pool on Monday mornings and spend an hour splashing around....it's fun and provides some good exercise for the both of us.  I hope you had a restful weekend.

I found these gold plates at a garage sale for a dollar.  They are super light weight and are meant to hang on a wall.  I did not find them at all attractive when I bought them, but I love a good challenge and thought I could spruce them up.

I cleaned them up and then gave them a coat of Kilz primer.  After the primer had dried I painted a few coats of white semi-gloss latex paint.  I then antiqued them in a gray paint.....where I simply rubbed the paint on and wiped off the excess until I got the desired effect.  Here they are after.....what do you think?  Better before or after??

Make it a great Monday....

My Inspiration

Good morning!! It's Saturday and I seem to be up really, really early. Sometimes it's nice to be up before everyone else in the house though. It's nice and quiet and a lot more gets accomplished. I really should still be sleeeping though. :)

Anyhow since I am up I might as well share with you the latest project that I have been working on. Sometimes when you start a table it's nice to have an idea in mind of where you would like to go with it. I got my inspiration from this sofa table that I bought a couple of weeks ago. I normally don't like to buy pieces that are already finished, because that is half the fun, but I couldn't pass this up. I knew right where it was going in the house and I just adored the color combination. So with this little cute coffe table I decided to attempt to use the same colors and rough it up a little to make it look similar. I used a light blue paint, cream, and gold. This is how it came out...of course it's not exact but they kind of look like they are in the same family. :) Have a splendid weekend!!

This is a picture of the piece that I fell in love with and was my inspiration.

This is the before picture of the little table. Nothing terrible about it but needed some sort of makeover.

 Here are the after pictures.
